What Food to Eat in Malang, Indonesia
Agustus 03, 2019There are people in the world so hungry, that God cannot appear to them except in the form of bread. - Mahatma Gandhi
I have been approximately 7 years in Malang, East Java, Indonesia, so you can imagine how many kinds of food have come into my stomach and how much money Ive spent to just convert it as dramatic poo. But yeah, good food is a foundation of genuine happiness. 👀
Here are some of my favorites with pictures I captured.

BRUNCH WITH A VIEW (of trees and small river) Bakso Sayur Jalan Salatiga |
Bakso refers to meatball and Sayur means vegetables, now you've got the meaning. Sometimes people call it Bakso Semarang since it is located near jalan Semarang or the front gate of Universitas Negeri Malang. What I like from Bakso Sayur Jalan Salatiga is that we can take anything by our own. It costs IDR 2,000 - IDR 3,000 for each meatball, IDR 500 for the tofu, and the others (vegetables and noodle) are free! Currently it has opened up many new branches. You can find it here Bakso Sayur Jalan Semarang Universitas Negeri Malang.

Lasagna - LaiLai Cafe/Illy Cafe |

Nasi Ayam Suwir Sambal Bawang and the holy grail Chocolate Milkshake |
Another best of the best food in town: Lasagna of Illy Cafe Lai Lai. You know that it is a traditional dish from Bologna in Northern Italy. The cheese, the minced meat, the layers, everything is so perfect. There are another two dishes I love very much in this cafe, Pasta Bayam (spinach paste) and Nasi Panggang Beef Lada Hitam (Black Pepper Beef Baked Rice). Oh the Tuna Pancake and Nasi Ayam Suwir Sambal Bawang (Shredded Chicken Rice) are also perfect. The snacks like Onion Ring and Strawberry Tripple Ice Cream are unarguably delicious. Well, basically I just love everything in this cafe haha.

Sego Krengsengan and Bakwan Jagung - Sego Sambel Cak Uut |
This warung is made for you who like spicy food that much cause you can see, it's totally chili everywhere. But dont worry, now they've prepared non spicy food too. I love the ambience. The decoration completed by Bali intrumental music. However, since many people are waiting, you can't dine in for a long time like in a cafe. You may find the location here Sego Sambel Cak Uut. Avoid coming here at lunch time if you dont want to wait that long.

Students' Savior - KAYUNGYUN to the rescue
|
It's chicken porridge in the picture, but Kayungyun has instant noodles which are illogically more delicious than we've made by ourselves, I run out of idea haha. There are too many Kayungyun in Malang you may check it on the internet. What makes it special is that it doesn't need much time to serve the food. There are also green bean porridge and black sticky rice porridge.
Just checked it on google and found too many Kayungyungs |
Next, we have Ta Wan that you can find in Malang City Point and Malang Olympic Garden. It's basically Chinese food and they provide meal package from personal to birthday meal package. Many people consider this restaurant is over price, but still, the food is that good.

Se'i Sapi Sambal Kecap - Se'i Sapi Atambua |
Looking for tender and tasty beef se'i? Here it is! Se'i Sapi Atambua. Their portion is filling yet the food is pretty affordable (IDR 17,000 - 22,000). It goes really well with the se'i and veggie. It opens at 11.30-22.00, so it's suitable for your lunch or dinner.

Beef Carbonara Udon, Chicken Katsu Curry Udon, Kakiage, and Nori Tempura - Marugame Udon |
Hear hear! I love it, I really do. Marugame Udon is the best (How many times did I say the best?lol). It is a culinary place serving Japanese-style udon and tempura as the main dish. Udon lover will certainly enjoy the meal, but the price is not for everyone, I mean, people on budget probably can't eat here. Do you know that Marugame Udon in Malang is their 50th outlet?! It opened in March 2019 and is still one of people's favorite places. The service is fast and many side dish to choose. The place is cozy and has an awesome interior design. They also serve rice and beef like Yoshinoya's Yakiniku Beef. My recomendation will be: Chicken Katsu Curry Udon/Sukiyaki Beef Rice, Kakiage (vegetables tempura), Skewed Tofu Roll, and Ocha (you'll get free refill for another bottle of Ocha or Lemon Tea). Yummi~
Since I have mentioned it, so here is my another favorite Japanese dish. The food and baverage choice are not as many as Marugame, but the beef bowl is just perfect. You can refill ocha tea as much as you want. No regret Yoshinoya is (again) the best!
Note: the picture of Yoshinoya is not mine, but I cant wait to post hehe

Nasi Goreng Nanas (Pineapple Fried Rice), Sup Tomyam Seafood (if I'm not mistaken), Thai Coffee, & Gra Pow Jay - ThaiNam |

Lovely flowers on our table - ThaiNam |
If you're looking for great Vietnamese and Thai (that's why they name it ThaiNam) cuisine, this place is the right choice. To me, the food has rich flavour and aromatic. It has a calm ambience, homey, and authentic; strong traditional Thai's interior. The feels of the place is quite private. Some people would say that ThaiNam is pricey, but I think it's reasonable for worth the taste and ambience.

Nasi Bhuk Lippo (CIMB Niaga) |
Last but not least, Nasi Bhuk Lippo (CIMB Niaga), since the location is right in the front of CIMB Niaga bank near Pasar Besar Malang and it'll closed when the bank is open. So basically you need to go there early morning. Nasi Bhuk is Madura-East Java-mixed rice with jackfruit soup, empal (dried beef), and coconut serundeng chips. Nasi Bhuk Lippo is probably only familiar for people who was born in Malang, cause I cant even find the location in google. My friend told me that people usually buy Nasi Bhuk in other well-known places. But still, to me, this is the best one. The price is affordable, but the place to dine in is very limited.

Nasi Bhuk is across this building |
That's it, but not all. There of course still much food in this city, but I have no picture yet. So, see you on another culinary post.
How about you? What do you eat in the place you're living in?
